Ministries

Union Grove offers many opportunities to serve God and the community through a variety of ministries. Whether your gifts lie in playing with the Holy Rollers praise band, cooking at the homeless shelter, or traveling with the youth to rebuild homes in Mississippi, you can find your place at Union Grove.

Worship

Sunday morning worship is at 10 am, followed by a fellowship time and Sunday School. On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate Holy Communion during the service and have a covered-dish luncheon after the service. A nursery is available during the service.

We also have special worship services on Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving Eve, and Christmas Eve.

Outreach

Project Compassion Care Teams

Several care teams have formed out of concern for people we know who have special needs:

Elizabeth's Friends: This team provided support for the family of a young girl with Batten's Disease.

Visitation: This team visits with shut-ins and makes sure they have what they need.

Faith Team: This team agrees to works for one year with a prisoner who has just been released and provides support for a smooth transition back into society.

Front Porch Ministries (Hospitality and Welcome)

Front porches used to be one of life’s most important locations. Whether you lived in town and the proximity of your front porch to the sidewalk quite naturally entwined your life with that of your neighbor’s, or you lived outside of town and had to be more intentional about gathering: the front porch was the place for sitting, rocking, swinging, waxing eloquent, and just plain sharing life.

We are blessed at Union Grove to share a ministry setting of over twenty acres. Beautiful trees, a spring, a wonderful playground, open fields, great facilities, an amphitheatre, a soon-to-be-constructed covered picnic area, and plans for lots more—our campus is a holy and sacred place where community can gather, worship, and share life.

Front Porch Ministries seeks to reach out to our community, to invite and welcome folks to come and share the hospitality and spirit that is Union Grove UMC. If there is something stirring in your heart, if your soul longs for God’s presence, we invite you to come and join with us as together we seek to discern and answer God’s moving in our lives.

Regular Activities:

  • Providing hospitality and welcome at all church gatherings
We prepare welcome/activity bags for the children and have a “Front Porch” welcome center to share information and invitation to all visitors and guests. We want our church to have an intentional atmosphere of hospitality and welcome for all.
  • Providing intentional outreach and invitation to our community
We maintain a church Web site, publish information about our mission and ministry opportunities and special activities, and open our facilities to community groups and gatherings.
  • Celebrating and remembering “rites of passage” in the lives of our children, youth, and adults
These include birth, baptism, confirmation, birthdays, graduations, marriage, and death.
  • Cornerstone College Outreach
This is an Intentional outreach to our college students and college-aged young
adults. We send care packages twice each semester and hold special events and gatherings during the holidays and summer.

Prison Ministry

Various groups in the church take turns providing snacks for the inmates who attend the Yokefellows meetings at the Orange County Correctional Center in Hillsborough.

Interfaith Council Homeless Shelter

Members who enjoy cooking for a crowd get together on the fourth Sunday of every other month to cook dinner for the homeless people staying at the shelter on Rosemary Street in Chapel Hill.

Adopt-a-Highway

This group gets together four mornings a year to enjoy a walk down our quiet country road while picking up trash.
